Photographic image of an enclosure for an animal

Habitats

This work presents a number of artificial habitats for animals. These purpose built spaces are found in zoos, shows and aquariums around the world. The inhabitants of these spaces are absent and so we are left to ponder what animal may reside there.

Natural History

This work depicts a number of animal species in artificial environments. Increasingly we live in modern societies where we are detached from the natural world. The encounters with animals that we do have are often in zoos or museums. This work seeks to amplify the artificial nature of these encounters and to prompt reflection on the impact we have on other animal species and their habitats.

Observations

This video work captures visitor's reactions to one of the aquatic displays at the Sydney Aquarium. Reduced to shadows, the visitors' gestures and personal interactions can be observed. Body language is emphasized, responses are revealed. Life unfolds quietly in front of the large glass tank and the lens of the camera.

Future in Reverse

A limited edition boxed set of twelve images of obsolete technology juxtaposed against the never ending void of space and distant planets. This work is a wry look at the technological achievements of our fairly recent past, from the earliest forms of aerials and radio communication to the humble domestic tea making machine. This work strives to put all that "progress" into perspective.

Encounters

This work delves into the world of intricately constructed and sometimes gory museum tableau, where stuffed and pinned participants act out fictitious encounters of the natural world. These images are of Australian birds and insects. While they may be well known, real life encounters remain rare to most Australians.

Urban Vistas

A view from a series of windows depict one aspect of urban living. As more and more local councils push for high and medium density housing, the ¼ acre block of the Australian Dream is fast disappearing under a plethora of appartments. This is the new suburbia of the 21st century.

Elsewhere

This work arises out of an interest in capturing moments of everyday life with a camera. The images are of public walkways and the people that travel through them. The locations are quiet places, often devoid of crowds where lone individuals wander lost in thought.

Mediated Visions

Photographed at Versailles, France, in the depths of winter, this work grew out of a fascination with historical locations that have been transformed into tourist attractions. It explores our pre-conceived impressions of such sites and how these mental images impact on our experience.
